New to yoga?
Your first class
Everything you need to know before you come along — what a class is like, what to bring, and how booking works.
What a class is like
What to expect
Classes start with gentle warm-up exercises for the neck, shoulders, hips and lower back. We then move into some stronger stretches and core strengthening exercises — toning the abdominals, pelvic floor and glutes. Once you’re familiar with the movements, we encourage you to combine conscious breathing with the postures.
We finish with about 5 minutes of breathing practice to prepare the mind for meditation, followed by a 10-minute relaxation or meditation. This is where the benefits of the class are integrated into the whole body–mind system, and deep-seated tensions are released.

Who the classes are for
Our classes are gentle and therapeutic, and welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Quentin and Bhumi offer easier and stronger options for each posture, so you can move at your own pace and choose what suits your body.
Please let your teacher know before class if you have any back or health problems, or are pregnant. If you’ve had recent surgery, check with your doctor before attending. When you enquire, you can also ask for a private conversation about whether the classes suit you.
What to bring
- A yoga mat if you have one, or a thick blanket. You’re welcome to borrow a mat for your first few weeks; if you keep coming, we ask you to bring your own so there are spare mats for new students.
- A bottle of water.
- An extra blanket or jumper in the colder months, for the relaxation at the end of class.
It’s best to come with an empty tummy — leave about an hour after a light meal, or 2–3 hours after a full meal.
In class
- Talk to your teacher before class. Fill in a short registration form and let us know about any back or health problems, or pregnancy.
- Be gentle with yourself. Yoga is about learning to listen to your own body. Never push into pain, and rest whenever you want to. Start with the easier options and move on to harder ones when you feel ready.
- Ask us anything. If you have any problems or questions during class, please talk to your teacher and we’ll do our best to help.

Common questions
Can I join part-way through a term?
Yes — new students are welcome at any time. If you join part-way through, you pay for the weeks remaining in the term.
Do I need my own mat?
Not at first. You’re welcome to borrow one of our mats for your first few weeks.
What if I miss a class?
All of our classes are live-streamed, and term enrolment includes unlimited Zoom classes — so you can catch up by joining any class online that week, or do a make-up class later in the term.
What if I’m feeling unwell?
Please don’t come to class if you feel unwell. You can join the class live on Zoom, follow one of our free audio classes, or do a make-up class later in the term.
Can I try a class online?
Yes. Every class is live-streamed on Zoom. See online classes for how it works.
